The World Junior Hockey Championship has officially finished in Victoria.
The quarterfinal games were played at the Save On Foods Memorial Centre on January 2nd, with Switzerland defeating Sweden 2-0, and the USA beating the Czech Republic 3-1.
Over the course of the 17 day tournament, the Save on Foods Memorial Centre hosted over 90-thousand fans who watched 2,500 minutes of world class hockey.
The World Juniors brought an enormous economic impact to Victoria and Vancouver Island. The Greater Victoria Sports Tourism Commission has reported that the tournament will account for a $10-million dollar injection to local businesses.
The developer and operator of the rink, the GSL Group, is extending a thanks to Hockey Canada and the International Ice Hockey Federation for choosing Victoria to co-host the event.
The semi-finals, which will pit Switzerland against Finland, and the USA against Russia, will take place in Vancouver at Roger's Arena, as will the Gold/Silver and Bronze medal games. The relegation games will also be played in Vancouver.
