Central Saanich police are appealing for witnesses to come forward with information on a tragic incident involving two sisters Monday night.
The women - both in their 40's - were walking a dog northbound along Central Saanich Road, just south of Mt Newton Cross Road when an SUV travelling southbound crossed the centre line just after 7pm, and struck them.
One woman died at the scene. Her sister is fighting for her life in hospital. The dog also died.
An off-duty paramedic was one of the first to arrive on the horrific scene, and helped to stablize the women.
Sargeant Paul Brailey of the Saanich Police Department says officers are with the surviving pedestrian and the male driver in hospital.
"It's too early to determine if speed or alcohol or drugs were a factor. Cars do travel at a little faster clip than they're supposed to in this area."
The woman were walking on the gravel shoulder on the other side.
There are no sidewalks and the speed limit is 50 k/hr on that section of Central Saanich Road.
