Environment Canada has issued a waterspout watch for the Strait of Georgia after a funnel with a 200-metre base was spotted off Lesqueti Island this (Thursday) morning. A waterspout is like a tornado over the water.
The waterspout was seen by members of the Coast Guard at French Creek as well as Shaun Radke who was out working on a commercial sein vessel. Radke says he heard the warning about 9am, looked out of the wheelhouse and saw it.
Radke told CTV Vancouver Island he'd never seen anything like it and described it as "God reaching down for some fish". He and the crew watched in silence for at least 10 minutes, awe struck by the spectacle.
The waterspout was the result of a thunderstorm that moved through the area.
