The mayor of Victoria says she doesn't think the prime minister's announcement on pipelines today is good news for Canadians.
Lisa Helps was reacting to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement that the government is approving an expansion of the Trans Mountain pipeline between Alberta and Burnaby that will triple the pipeline's capacity.
"I opposed it as a mayor. My council opposed it. The mayor of Vancouver opposed it. Even Trudeau's MPs in the Lower Mainland opposed it."
Lisa Helps says tanker traffic will increase dramatically in the Juan de Fuca Strait.
"The fact is if there is an oil spill it is impossible to clean up. Yes, there are $1.5-billion dollars of new moneys put toward ocean maintenance, and oil spill clean up and response. But the fact is all the oil can never be removed."
Helps was speaking on CFAX 1070 this afternoon with Pamela McCall.
