The Mayor of Victoria is wondering if residents would open their doors and billet to the homeless.
Would you consider billeting for a homeless person in Victoria?
Mayor Lisa Helps is putting forward the idea she got from residents and researching World War II when Victorians opened their doors to war workers.
“There was a housing crisis then and there is a housing crisis now,” said Helps who said she got the idea while researching and talking to other residents in the city.
Helps has started a working group with to explore the idea saying she has already received support from residents willing to open up their houses.
“There are working people in their cars, are working people living in their woodsheds. We have a 0.5 per cent vacancy rate. There’s a lots of cranes in the air and housing being built but in the meantime there is the shortage.”
She says this would be by choice only and a lot of the details have not been talked about yet.
