Victoria's Chinese community is shaking its head because of an act of vandalism at the Chinese Cemetery.

The twin towers of the ceremonial altar, used for burning incense and for offerings of food now have spray paint all over them.

Victoria Councilor and a member of the Chinese community, Charlayne Thornton-Joe says it's a careless act.

“I’m very saddened, angry to some extent. I don’t think it’s anything racially motivated, I think it was someone just being careless insensitive and really not thinking."

Thornton-Joe says the problem now is getting the paint off without furthering harming the stones.

The site at Harling Point is said to be the oldest existing Chinese cemetery in Canada.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact the Oak Bay Police Department.
