Victoria Police were confronted by a man with an axe Saturday morning near Hillside Mall.
Officers were called to the 3000-block of Scott Street just before 9:30 a.m. by an area resident who was concerned by a man walking down the street carrying an axe. When the resident spoke with the man with the axe, the man indicated that he planned to head to the nearby shopping centre and seek a confrontation with police officers.
Officers blocked off surrounding streets and tried negotiating with the man, but he refused and claimed he was armed with other weapons.
Police then deployed rubber bullets and a bean-bag gun, which caused him to drop the axe and surrender.
The 28 year old Victoria man was then taken into custody and transported to hospital for observation where he was later released.
Police were concerned for his mental health and he was returned to hospital for a 30-day psychiatric hold.
He faces charges including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching conditions.
