A pedestrian struck on the Old Island Highway in View Royal Wednesday night is in ICU at Victoria General in stable condition, and with non-life threatening injuries.
West Shore RCMP say witnesses told officers them the man had just gotten off a bus and was jaywalking across the 130-block when he was hit. The driver did not see the victim until it was too late to stop, and is cooperating with the investigation.
West Shore RCMP spokesman Cnst. Matt Baker advises drivers to be vigilant and slow down when poor weather results in reduced visibility. He also says it is illegal to jaywalk under municipal bylaws.
He adds it's too early to say if charges will be laid but as far as the victim in concerned, the fact they landed in hospital is likely enough of a deterrent.
He also notes there was a pedestrian crosswalk just a short distance from where the accident occured.
