A recent decision by Save-On-Foods to end its 2-dollar-per-hour hazard pay for employees during the COVID-19 pandemic has been met with shock and disappointment by union members.
The union representing Save-On-Foods workers is demanding a return of the Pandemic Premium, which is due to end May 30th.
UFCW 1518 President Kim Novak says BC is only beginning to relax its pandemic response, and the crisis is far from over, especially for front line workers.
"Recognition of their tireless work---but there is time to make that change. Now is the time for the decision to be reversed and let's reinstate the Premium Pay and extend it at least for now as we get through phase two."
Novak says the union has sent a letter to the employer on behalf of its membership that the Pandemic Premium continue.
Meanwhile, some grocery store chains continue to offer additional wages during the pandemic across Canada.
