The changes to Pandora to accommodate the new 2-way bikes lanes has made the lanes too narrow for city buses.
That's the word from Ben Williams, president of Unifor local 333 BC, which represents bus drivers in Greater Victoria.
Williams says BC Transit told City Staff how wide the lanes needed to be, but it didn't happen:
" We were absolutely perplexed as to how the city went ahead and installed these lanes. BC Transit clearly communicated to them that the bus lane needed to be 3.3 metres wide for the bus to be able to fit down it and navigate the road. The city then went in and installed the lanes at 3 metres wide. So this created a situation where the operators were actually have to straddle more than one lane just to be able to navigate that road."
Williams says that's about a foot narrower than the minimum standards to operate safely, and it's causing frustration for drivers and other motorists.
