They didn't cause any trouble, but they're a good reminder that we live in an active earthquake zone.
That's how seismologist John Cassidy sums up a pair of quakes that struck off the coast of Port Hardy Sunday morning. The 4.5 magnitude and 4.2 tremors happened around 11 in the morning.
"They're what we call light earthquakes. Had they been closer to Vancouver Island they would have been felt by people over a fairly wide region. These earthquakes were 120 kilometres offshore, so they weren't felt in this instance," says Cassidy.
Cassidy says there are several reasons why it's important to note smaller, distant quakes even if they don't make much on an impact.
"It terms of science, we're using these small earthquakes to better understand where large earthquakes will occur in the future. So scientifically these little earthquakes are important."
No problems were reported or expected after Sunday's quakes.
