The U.S. Geological Survey initially reported a quake, with a preliminary reading of 8.2, struck 278 kilometres southeast of Kodiak, Alaska at a depth of about 10 kilometres. It later lowered the quake to 7.9-magnitude.
Emergency Info BC issued a tsunami warning that covered the Juan de Fuca Strait, the outer west coast of Vancouver Island, the central coast and northeast Vancouver Island, and the north coast and Haida Gwaii. The warning did not include Vancouver.
Shortly after 4am, the tsunami warning for Victoria and surrounding area ended
