Saying "many British Columbians simply don't trust ICBC" -- the province's Attorney General has announced changes at the Insurance Corporation.
David Eby unveiled a new fairness office at ICBC that will focus on customer fairness and accountability:
" An office that is independent from ICBC's claims arm, is accountable to government, reports publicly to ICBC's board, and is simply more accessible toi the public when concerns come up."
Eby says the office will be in place by spring 2021, and will make recommendations aimed at fixing the problems at the public insurer.
" The office will be required to report to the public in plain language on the type and number of issues that it's heard, along with recommendations it has made to ICBC. ICBC in turn will be required to report publicly on the actions it takes to respond to these recommendations."
Also announced today -- the introduction of pre-litigation payments allowing ICBC to offer payments up front for injured parties, without giving up right to sue.
Media were also told of an internal fraud case currently before the courts, and involving an individual who worked for ICBC. Eby can't say much about the case except that the person no longer works at ICBC, all money has been recuperated, and changes made to avoid similar issues in future.
