After the Bay Street bridge was closed for 5 months of work, traffic has become a nightmare for commuters.
Drivers trying to get from Vic West and Esquimalt into Victoria are being faced with gridlock.
And BC Transit drivers are being caught up in the mess as well. There are reports of buses taking an hour and a half to get from the Dockyards to downtown.
Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardin says even she was surprised to see the length of the lineups, but adds the Bay St. Bridge isn't the only project underway now:
" We have construction Admirals and the Highway. We have construction through the wastewater project that has started on Tillicum, and that will affect transit across that bridge. The Bay Street Bridge is now only one way, so we don't have any options for vehicles."
Desjardins isn't sure what kind of consultation took place between Victoria and Esquimalt officials about the work, but says she is prepared to reach out and see if there are any solutions.
Businesses in the area are advocating for single-lane alternating traffic on the bridge. But city officials say they did look at that, but dismissed it as being too disruptive.
