A vigilant manager at a downtown Victoria store managed to catch a man trying to steal a bike.
A man was in the Giant Bicycles Victoria, and when the staff had their attention elsewhere, he tried to walk out the front door with a road bike valued at $1,100.
Dylan Phye, manager of the store, told CTV Vancouver Island that a peculiar sound gave the man away.
"When the doorbell rings for someone entering or leaving the store, we always have to pay attention to that, just in case things like this happen. But on the way out of the store, he hit the pedal of the bike against the doorway, which made quite the loud crash. So I quickly looked at that. No one was up there when I walked up there, but I checked outside anyway."
Phye saw the man down the street, and chased after him. After exchanging " a few choice words", he retrieved the bike and brought it back to the store.
He says the police were called and are investigating the case, because the bike store was not the first target. The man apparently had just come from Eddie Bauer, where he had stolen some goods from that store.
On Friday, Giant Bicycles Victoria posted the surveillance video footage of the attempted theft to their Facebook page.
Phye says they decided to post the video online to help alert other businesses in Victoria.
"Obviously it's a pretty common problem with thieves and small, petty crimes. But just to put it out there that we do have great cameras, we are always alert, so don't try anything with us cause we will catch you or we will find you. And just to prove a point that it could happen to anyone, it happen that quick, so you have to stay on the ball."
