Opponents to a contentious contaminated dumping site near Shawnigan Lake have been delivered some good news.
A B.C. Supreme Court judge has reinstated a stay on a permit for the site, stopping further dumping of toxic soil.
It's now being sent back to the Environmental Appeal Board for more judicial review.
The judge found that the operator, Cobble Hills Holdings filed misleading evidence in court.
Shawnigan Lake Area Director Sonia Furstenau says the ruling is vindication.
“It’s vindication that the judge agrees with what have been saying as a community that this process was broken. This is where I call on the Ministry of Environment to step up.”
The province says it will take time to review the decision to determine the province's role in permitting a facility and that it is concerned over the way evidence was presented by the company to the Environmental Appeal Board.
