West Shore RCMP were led on a strange chase through View Royal Thursday morning.
It started with a report of a man walking the concrete barriers on the Trans Canada Highway near the Old Island Highway Overpass.
As police were on their way to the scene two members of the public were able to talk the man off the railing, but he then stole a vehicle from one of the good Samaritans.
He sped off in the F150 truck and crashed it into a pole at the Helmcken Road-Trans Canada Highway intersection.
The man then fled and stole a canoe from a home on Chancellor Avenue. But as it turned out, the canoe had no paddles. Police found the man drifting into Portage Inlet.
The man eventually gave himself up to police and was taken into custody. His mental health is being assessed.
At the same time that was going on West Shore RCMP were dealing with two other high priority incidents. One was the suspicious package at the bus stop located on Goldstream Ave at Jacklin Ave, which ended up being harmless.
The other was a report of a wrong-way driver on the Trans Canada near Millstream moving against traffic. The confused driver was stopped safely.
