74 year old Jeanne Socrates attempt to become the oldest person to solo sail around the world has been pushed back by a day. Socrates was set to sail Monday but her departure has been delayed until Tuesday now in part because of the stormy weather.
“Well the weather hasn’t helped it will be nice to leave in calmer waters, but I also need to ensure my Satellite phone is working.”
Socrates admits this will likely be her last trip around the globe, but she's not worried that her age will affect her physical ability to make such a demanding journey and she's proud to be an inspiration.
“it’s nice to have people tell me that because they see me doing this that they’re going to get on with it, it doesn’t have to be sailing but just to do anything. You don’t want to be sitting around later in life wishing you had done something, just get out there and do it.”
Socrates, a British sailor, is also using her trip to raise money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Britain.
