A smoky skies bulletin is affecting Greater Victoria.
Health officials say while it's not the same as air quality advisory -- people with underlying health conditions, seniors and the young should take things easier as you could be more susceptible to smoke.
Island Health's Dr. Murray Fyfe tells us what the concern is:
" So what we're concerned about with the smoke is fine particulate matter. It's tiny little droplets or particles of liquids and solids that mix together from the smoke in a fire and they create a sort of toxic brew that we're breathing in. And we have a provincial standard of 25 micrograms per cubic centimeter."
Fyfe says while we aren't exceeding that right now, an advisory would result if we do go above that.
He suggests those concerned about the smoke try to minimize exposure by staying indoors, keep windows and doors closed, use your air conditioner if you have one -- as the filter helps keep the air cleaner. And contact your health care provider if you have any further concerns.
