Sidney fire chief said no one was injured after a delivery truck hit some low hanging power lines, resulting in one block of Second Street being closed this morning.
Fire chief Brett Mikkelson said they received a call at 9:41 a.m. to respond to Second Street between Beacon Avenue and Bevan Avenue. He said power lines ended up pulling a piece of a nearby building off. He said it took approximately 25 minutes to clear the power line, and the street was closed to vehicles and pedestrians during that time.
“It hit it at such sufficient force that it pulled the line and pulled the portion of the building that the line was attached to down onto the sidewalk,” Mikkelson said. “Then we had a live power line on a vehicle and down on the street, so that was obviously a concerning few moments.”
Mikkelson said the driver did the right thing and stayed in the car until it was safe to exit, and pedestrians kept an adequate distance.
“The driver did an excellent job and stayed in his vehicle,” Mikkelson said. “It’s a busy part of the street and people did an excellent job staying minimum 10 metres away.”
Mikkelson said it's too early to tell if the cause of the incident was the power lines being hung too low, if they had fallen, or if the truck was too large for the street.
