Songhees and Esquimalt Nations joined at the Victoria Harbour today for the ceremonial grand opening of a community joint venture, Salish Seaside RV Haven.
Following a modern redesign, work began in April 2017 to rebuild the former West Bay Village RV Park from the ground up. The prime peninsula location now boasts a wide range of modern amenities, a two-story clubhouse and lounge, large concrete RV sites, and commanding harbour views.
“This is a proud moment for the people of Songhees and Esquimalt Nations,” said Songhees Chief Ron Sam. “Thank you to everyone involved for making this Western Canada’s premier RV Park.”
Spearheaded by Chief Ron Sam of Songhees Nation and the late Esquimalt Nation Chief Andrew Thomas, Salish Seaside RV Haven began accepting reservations in August 2017 and is already 85 per cent booked for the months June to September.
“Thanks to my uncle’s dedication and collective effort of everyone involved, his vision of creating new opportunities within the community has come true,” said Robert Thomas, of behalf of the Esquimalt Nation Council.
Salish Seaside RV Haven is ‘Big Rig’ friendly with sites up to 72 feet. All sites offer sewer, water, 20-, 30-, and 50-amp power, and free wi-fi access. A brand-new clubhouse features modern washrooms, showers, laundry – and an upstairs harbour lounge with decks, barbeque and fireplace.
“Salish Seaside RV Haven is a significant economic and tourism benefit to the Township of Esquimalt,” said Barbara Desjardins, Mayor of Esquimalt. “The combination of views and location with modern amenities will bring many tourists to Esquimalt and the region. We congratulate Esquimalt and Songhees Nations on this world class facility.”
Original First Nations artwork by Darlene Gait is displayed in the gift shop, located in a former CFB Esquimalt heritage guardhouse, complete with authentic jail cells dating back to 1887. With direct water-taxi links to downtown Victoria, the park is a convenient hub for visitors to explore the capital region.
“Our opening ceremony was a great success and a chance to showcase this beautiful new property,” said Manager Tom Westley. “With a busy summer season ahead of us, we look forward to promoting Victoria, B.C. as one of the world’s top tourist destinations.”
