Saanich fire said they responded to multiple "suspicious" spot fires in Panama Flats off of Interurban Road, which have now been extinguished.

Deputy fire chief Dan Wood said they don't yet know the cause of the fires, but due to how close they were, they have been deemed suspicious.

“We have SPD, Saanich Police, there as well helping us with the preliminary investigation. No cause as of yet, but it does look suspicious,” Wood said. “This time of day and that many fires that close together, and without any lightning, it's leaning towards suspicious.”

Wood said they received multiple calls from cyclists in the area reporting the fires around 3:20 p.m. on July 16.

At 3:41 p.m. Saanich Fire tweeted that the fires had been extinguished.
