People in the Port Alberni area are expecting as much as 300 millimeters of rain before tomorrow. Flood watches remain for the Sproat and Somass rivers.
Reporter Jessica Lepp with CTV Vancouver Island spent Monday around the Tseshaht First Nation on the Somass River, one of the areas expected to be hard hit by flooding. She says "you can clearly see that the water levels are higher than normal. Many yards already have flooding. There’s lots of debris going down the river."
Lepp tells C-FAX a local first nation school was closed as a precaution. She says several families that were evacuated in anticipation of flooding were allowed to return home, but more evacuations could be coming Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.
Highway 4, connecting Port Alberni to Ucluelet and Tofino, might flood by this evening. That would leave smaller winding roads and logging roads as the only alternatives.
