The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is nearing its fundraising target for a massive renovation project after a $2-million dollar commitment from a philanthropist with ties to Victoria.
Art gallery director Jon Tupper says Michael Audain is the primary financial supporter of Canadian visual arts projects.
"He grew up in Victoria, and is related to the Dunsmuirs. He has a special place in his heart for the city, and he's supported projects all across Canada but really, really focused on British Columbia art and artists."
Designs for the renovation project are complete. Tupper says an increase in construction costs has bumped the total project cost from $21-million dollars to $24-million.
The federal government has agreed to contribute $7-million dollars, but it's contingent on the province doing the same. Audain's contribution is also contingent on a provincial grant. Tupper says talks with the province are ongoing.
The art gallery hopes to begin construction in June, but Tupper admits the project would face a great delay if they can't get the province onboard.
