A woman who served the city of Victoria as an Alderman in the 1980's is being remembered as a dedicated member of the community.
Janet Morton Derby Baird served on Victoria City Council for 9 years -- from 1981 to 1990. Baird also served on the Victoria Police Board, was Chair of Camosun College Board and founding Chair of the Camosun Foundation.
Her obituary notes she was passionate about the democratic process, becoming Returning Officer for the federal riding of Victoria and Deputy District Electoral Officer for the provincial riding of Oak Bay/Gordon Head.
Baird was made an honorary citizen of the City of Victoria and was the recipient of the Royal Roads University Community Service Award in 2002.
Former Saanich Mayor Frank Leonard calls her the strongest council members he has ever worked with.
Baird died Monday -- at age 82 -- less than 2 weeks before her 83rd birthday.
