Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen says it's time for the wild west of spending on municipal politics to end.
B-C municipalities are asking the provincial government to restrict the role of money in local politics, they hope in time for next year's elections.
Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen says the Union of B-C Municipalities passed the resolution at its annual general meeting in Vancouver after extra effort by Jensen and Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps and councilor Murdock. "We resurrected it with the help of Mayor Helps and councilor Murdock, the UBCM says they will now urge the provincial government to bring in changes. It's very timely they're doing it at the provincial level why should we have the wild west at the local level."
The B-C government has tabled a bill to rein in political fundraising at the provincial level, such as banning corporate and union donations and limiting individual contributions.
