The latest numbers of deaths due to illicit drugs are out and one finding of concern is the number of overdose deaths indoors and especially in residences.
The BC Coroners Service figures show April had the second highest recorded numbers in a single month in the province, with 136 people dead as a result of illicit use, almost double the April total for 2016.
Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe says it’s of great concern that despite harm reduction measures now in place and the public safety messages issued, people are still using illicit drugs in private residences where help isn't readily available.
The recent stats show nine out of 10 illicit drug overdose deaths occurred indoors, with more than half in private residences.
