The nomination period for the Nanaimo by-election closed at 1 p.m. today (Wed) with 6 candidates representing 6 registered political parties. The by-election is considered crucial for the BC NDP government who, with BC Green support, have a tenuous hold on power.
The BC-NDP will be represented by Sheila Malcolmson, who gave up her federal seat to run provincially. Well-known area businessman Tony Harris represents the Liberals. Retired teacher Michele Ney, daughter of a former Nanaimo mayor -- Frank Ney -- carries the Green party banner.
The Interim Deputy leader of the BC-Conservative party -- Justin Greenwood of Langley -- will represent his party in the race.
Former Conservative MP, Robin Mark Richardson, is running as the Vancouver Island Party candidate -- a party he founded and leads. The party's goal is to turn Vancouver Island into a province.
And businessman Bill Walker will stand for the Libertarian Party.
Voters head to the polls on Wednesday, January 30th, with advance voting taking place from January 22 to 27th. Eligible voters can also vote at the Nanaimo district electoral office from now until 4 p.m. on January 30, or by mail.
