Nanaimo RCMP are reminding the public to be aware of scammers out looking to take your hard earned money when it comes to home repairs.
The detachment recently got a complaint from someone who was duped out of several thousand dollars paid to a decking company they found through a social media ad.
The victim paid up front -- but the job was not completed -- and the contractor's phone can no longer be reached. It was disconnected.
RCMP say dozens of similar reports are filed every year about fraudulent or unfinished work, over payment, threats and intimidation.
Constable Gary O'Brien says such frauds can involve decks, roof, gutter and driveway repairs -- and often the contractor knocks on your door looking for work.
Some warning signs include contractors telling you they have materials left over from a previous job; they only accept cash payments; they want all or a mahjority of the money up front; and pressuring you for an immediate decision.
O'Brien advises asking for references and to see their business license, and checking with your local Chamber of Commerce and Better Business Bureau.
