The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria confirms a missing Cessna aircraft and its two occupants, both deceased, have been found.
Search crews combed a swath of mountainous terrain on a small plane's projected flight path the day after the aircraft disappeared over B.C.
The two people aboard planned to pass over Kelowna, Hope and Boundary Bay before landing in Nanaimo. A friend identified the pilot as Calgary resident Ken Umbach, and said he was flying another person whose identity he did not provide publicly.
The transmitter was activated in an area about 90 nautical miles – or about 167 kilometres – near Hope.
Searchers were able to use the transmitter signal to narrow down the location to an area of about 10 to 20 square kilometres.
Crews from Chilliwack and Hope Search and Rescue searched the area on foot, looking for signs of Umbach and his friend, but the steep terrain as presented a challenge.
