Pearson United World College in Metchosin has bragging rights after one of their graduates was named a Rhodes Scholar for 2018. Nik Carverhill hails from Saskatoon, and attended Pearson -- a two-year, pre-university college -- from 2011 to 2013. He is currently at Yale University.
The Rhodes Scholarship is a postgraduate award given to exceptional students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford, with the aim of nurturing public-spirited leaders of the future. This year the Scholarship was awarded to 95 outstanding young women and men from 64 countries.
Carverhill is co-founder of "Raise Your Voice Canada", a charity that teaches youth leadership and outreach using debate, slam poetry, and leadership skills, providing them the tools to make a difference in their communities. He intends to pursue a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies at Oxford.
Former Rhodes Scholars include Canadian neuroscientist Marc Tessier-Lavigne, former US President Bill Clinton, Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, and Pulitzer Prize-winning US journalist Barton Gellman.
Carverhill is the 13th Rhodes Scholar to have attended Pearson College -- Canada's only United World College.
