A man has died after falling off the Johnson Street Bridge early Saturday morning.
Vic PD responded to multiple calls just after 1:30 am on Saturday after an intoxicated man lost his balance after climbing a railing on the Johnson street bridge, and falling into the water.
Several people attempted to give the man directions to swim to safety, and police officers attempted to assist the man, but their efforts were unsuccessful. One officer received minor injuries during the incident.
Vic PD does not have the capability to respond to a marine emergencies, and they called the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for assistance. A Canadian Coast Guard boat was dispatched, and, with the assistance of Vic PD officers, the man's body was recovered.
The file has been handed over to the BC Coroner Service.
