A Nanaimo area man suffered burns trying to save his dog from a shed fire on his property Saturday night.
Sadly the dog did not make it -- and the man had to be taken to hospital.
North Cedar Fire Department Chief, Percy Tipping, says they got the call just before 11:30pm:
" Upon arrival we found the approximatley 18 X 20 foot ( 4 X 5 metre) wood frame structure fully involved and quickly realized there was an injured person involved as well. So, we obviously had fire crews start fire suppression, but we also had another crew go and tend to this individual."
Tipping says it appears someone may have lived in the structure at some point as there was a fridge inside.
So far the cause is unknown, and a report there might have been explosion just prior to the fire erupting has not been verified.
Crews also worked to ensure flames did not spread to the surrounding area which is extremely dry right now.
