Residents of the old Travellers Inn at 3025 Douglas Street have received eviction notices telling themn to be out as of January 1st. A caller to the newsroom who did not want to be identified says the units are home to low income and hard-to-house individuals, including some youth.
According to the caller the eviction is because thew property owner will be doiong renovations. The notices suggest renters go to the property management website -- Brown Brothers Agencies -- to look for alternate housing -- but he says everything was in the $1,000 range which is unaffordable for those living there.
Meantime, the motel is not zoned for longterm tenancy so CFAX checked with Victoria City Hall to see if the owner had filed a rezoning application. The city says the owner has not applied for a re-zoning permit. Mayor Helps says even when re-zoning is in play the City can waive the need to evict during rezoning process.
CFAX called Brown BrothersAgency, the property management fire that looks after Travellers Inn. They referred us to the property owner F.C. Douglas Properties Ltd. We are waiting for their response.
