Ministry of Health confirms investigation at Island Healthrun facility
CTV Vancouver Island has learned an investigation is underway into as many as 8 alleged sex assaults at a Victoria care facility on Hillside Avenue.
The Ministry of Health confirms police are investigating complaints at a facility that deals with seniors and patients needing critical care.
There are 2 care facilities on Hillside Avenue adjacent to one another -- both run by Island Health - Aberdeen Critical Care Hospital and Hillside Seniors Health Centre.
While the health authority won't confirm or deny the allegations they have supplied a statement saying they cannot discuss personal issues due to privacy legislation; that allegations of a criminal matter must be reported to police; and that Island Health cooperates fully in any and all investigations.
The statement goes on to say that all staff who work with the vulnerable are required to provide a criminal record check, and where appropriate, Island Health will suspend staff while investigations are underway. They do not say whether that has happened.
The Ministry of Health also provided a statement confirming that Island Health informed them of the investigation, but since it's ongoing they will not comment.
