RCMP have notified the Independent Investigations Office of an incident yesterday (Thurs) that resulted in a man's death in the Comox Valley.
At about 10:45 p.m. RCMP were called to help Emergency Health Services after a member of the public reported concern for the well-being of an acquaintance staying at a local hotel.
Frontline officers responded and spoke to the man outside the hotel.
He assured members he would not commit any self-harm, but he returned to the hotel room, got a firearm -- and left, then took his own life.
BC Emergency Health Services, stationed nearby as a precaution, were called in. And while waiting for their arrival, officers administered first aid. But the man died.
The IIO BC will investigate to determine if police actions or inactions contributed to the man's death.
