An inconic aircraft has arrived in Victoria after a flyover this morning.
The B-25 Bomber, "Maid in the Shade", is taking part in the "Flying Legends of Victory Tour".
Ground coordinator Mike Mueller the B-25 is one of the less well known bombers of World War 2, but one that served in every theatre of combat.
" It's best known as the aircraft used in the raid by Jimmy Doolittle. Four months after Pearl Harbour they put 16 of these aircraft on the USS Hornet, took them to within 350 miles of Japan. They took off from the carrier, bomved their targets in Japan, and went on to, most of them, crash land in China."
The aircraft was used in America's first large-scale bombing offensive in the Philippines.The "Maid in the Shade" is one of only 34 B-25's in the world that is still flying.
The Flying Legends of Victory Tour is made possible by the volunteers of the non-profit Arizona Commemorative Air Force Museum, includes three restored WWII combat aircraft... also coming will be a C-47/DC-3 Combat Legend "Old Number 30;" B-17 Bomber "Sentimental Journey" and their crew. They'll visit about 50 cities from June through October on a mission to educate all generations about the role of aviation in combat.
Public tours are $14 a person or $28 for a family of 4.
Flights are also being offered, for about $400. Reservations are required.
