Environment Canada is forecasting the first major storm of the season will hit southern Vancouver Island tonight, and BC Hydro is preparing for potential power outages.
Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk says they'll have crews on standby this evening so they can lessen the impact of any outages that may arise.
"British Columbia has more trees per kilometre of utility line than any place else in North America. And Vancouver Island has the most in BC. So we do a lot of vegetation work, but unfortunately it's not going to eliminate all outages."
Environment Canada is expecting rain that will be heavy at times starting this afternoon and carrying through the evening. They are also expecting winds gusting up to 90 kilometres an hour tonight.
