Drive BC says Highway 4 remains shut down as crews deal with a tanker that flipped on its side, spilling fuel and shutting down the highway in both directions.
The accident happened around 4 p.m. Thursday and it is not expected to re-open until Friday morning.
Drive BC says the highway was shut down about 60 kilometres west of Port Alberni and 33 kilometres east of Ucluelet Junction due to the spill.
With no detours available, the closure has effectively cut off the western communities of Tofino and Ucluelet from the rest of Vancouver Island.
The driver was uninjured and no other vehicles were involved.
