There could be some changes to parking rates in downtown Victoria coming.
A proposal going to city councilors this week cites a need to change with the lack of parking spaces available in parkades for short term visitors due to development, bike lanes and public transit.
The proposal brought forward by councilor Geoff Young suggests a potential change to the first-hour-free policy at parkades as a solution.
“Whatever the long-term future of parking and transportation might be though, we have the responsibility of managing the existing parking supply effectively," Young said in proposal to a council committee.
The first hour free at parkades was brought into effect for a parking plan in 2014 that was designed to bring in more vehicles into the parkades, freeing up space on the street.
Parking spaces on the street are in decline though because of bike lanes and other development.
The motion asking for staff to recommend new rates is going before a committee meeting on Thursday.
