An estimated 60-hectare brush fire along Sooke Road is now contained.
The fire broke out around 3 O'clock Wednesday afternoon forcing RCMP to close Highway 14 in both directions
The fire destroyed one residence in the 4100 block of Sooke Road, a small cabin with a thatched roof was heavily damaged. No one has was injured.
Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey says the fire started small but grew quickly.
One eyewitness report indicates a motorhome was seen in the area earlier Wednesday, shooting sparks into the bush from something that appeared to be either dragging or shooting out of or from underneath the motorhome. "Such a lengthy area where you've got a 2-kilometre stretch on fire, that's not a typical cigarette caused fire but until the investigation is complete we won't know for sure."
5 fire departments including; Sooke, Langford, East Sooke; Otter Point and the forestry service responded.
All told 31 firefighters and one chopper was used to get the blaze under control.
