The search for a missing surfer has been called off, but his family still holds out hope.
At around 11 am on May 8, Jonah Mayhue, a 29 year old male from Sooke, went missing.
He was surfing near the North End of Pacheedat beach in Port Renfrew, and was last seen wearing light coloured board shorts, and sitting on his surfboard watching whales near the entrance to Gordon River.
An hour later, his surfboard washed up on shore, but there was no sign of Mayhue.
An extensive land, air, and sea search was conducted by Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, RCMP Westcoast Marine, RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, RCMP Search Incident Commanders, and Parks Canada.
After five days, the search was officially called off, though Jonah had not been found.
His family has released a statement, saying while they are grateful for everyone's efforts in trying to find Jonah, they would like some privacy at this time.
Jonah's family will not give up the search just yet, and anyone with information that could help locate him is asked to contact Sooke RCMP at 250 642 5241.
