Saanich Police are warning of a new twist on a scam referred to as the "Emergency Scam."
Sergeant Jereme Leslie said a 90-year old woman received a phone call claiming her son was in trouble, and she needed to send them money immediately.
Leslie said she initially hung up on the callers, and then phoned back a few minutes later, feeling concern for her son. She was transferred to a different line, which the person on the other line never picked up.
“About 20 minutes after that call back she heard a knock at her door and there were two unknown people at her door,” Leslie said. “She opened up the door and the men identified themselves as RCMP officers and they were wearing clothes very similar to the RCMP serge.”
The woman asked for identification, which they were unable to provide, so she closed the door and phoned the police.
“The police aren’t going to show up at your door and threaten to arrest you for not giving out money,” Leslie said. “Police will carry identification on them stating that they are the police and usually the uniforms are very identifiable, including driving a police car.”
The men are described as an Asian man, around 30 years old, 5'9"-5'10" tall, thinner build, wearing police style pants with a bronze stripe on the legs and a red jacket similar to a RCMP serge - and the other as a white man, possibly in his 40's, with a medium build also wearing similar clothing.
