The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria has been gifted a substantial art collection from 2 brothers raised in Victoria, Ian and Andrew Burchett.
The donated works are from the estate of their parents, long-time friends of the art gallery -- Peter and Damaris Burchett.
Among the art works are 2 paintings by Victoria artist, Emily Carr and 2 from Group of Seven member, Lawren S. Harris.
The bequest also includes an untitled painting of Finlayson Point on Dallas Road by Carr that was purchased by Peter Burchett's mother, Bets, directly from Carr. The 2 met over their shared passion for dogs.
The painting was given to Peter and Damaris as a wedding gift in 1958, and it hung over the fireplace mantle in the living room of the family home in North Saanich.
All of the paintings are included in the gift to the AGGV, along with several Chinese jade pieces from Peter's collection, a painting Day Before Yesterday, and two concrete panels by Herbert Siebner, and family portraits dating from the mid-1600's.
It's also been revealed that it was the Burchetts who anonymously purchased the Emily Carr painting 'Odds and End' s from the collection of the Greater Victoria Public Library in the late 1990's as a gift to the AGGV, wanting to keep the work in Victoria for the community to enjoy.
