A local mayor thinks her municipality's motto is due for an update.
Barb Desjardins is proposing at a council meeting that Esquimalt's current motto, "A Place of Shoaling Waters", be replaced with "Always First."
Desjardins says the current motto is confusing, and opines that many don't know what shoaling means.
The mayor says "Always First" was used within the township's corporate seal when Esquimalt was incorporated in 1912. The term was translated from Chinook wawa, a trading language used in the Pacific Northwest in the 1800's and early 1900's.
Desjardins proposes the continued use of "A Place of Shoaling Waters" in Esquimalt's coat of arms and all other symbols, but that "Always First" be adopted as the community motto.
