A Sidney man has been sentenced to 60 days in jail for slamming his SUV into a motorcyclist at Ogden Point and causing severe injuries that required amputation of the victim's leg below the knee.
Fifty-nine year-old Eric Gosse was taken immediately into custody after today's sentencing hearing on a conviction of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. His sentence also calls for a five-year driving prohibition.
Gosse was doing at least 50-kilometers an hour in an Ogden Point parking lot and authorities found no sign he tried to brake prior to hitting Ron Broda in 2013. Broda has no recollection of the incident due to his injuries.
In delivering the sentence, the judge said Gosse was driving dangerously, but intent couldn't be established. Gosse elected not to testify at trial and has never offered an explanation. The judge added that Gosse hasn't apologized to the victim or taken responsibility for his actions.
Gosse's lawyer says he will be appealing the conviction.
Following sentencing, Broda's wife Linda said the incident was life-altering for her family and now it will be for Gosse, as well. She added that she'll continue to pray for the man who injured her husband.
