A memorial scholarship established in the name of Constable Sarah Beckett, killed by a drunk driver in Langford in April last year, has been awarded.
The Capital Regional District Traffic Safety Commission awarded the inaugural $2,000 scholarship to Tanner Stevenson at yesterday's Victoria Shamrocks game, as members of the Westshore RCMP and Cnst. Beckett's family looked on.
Stevenson will be attending Royal Roads next month to complete a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. His interest in policing has led Tanner to become an Infantryman in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve and a volunteer with the Saanich Police Reserves.
The scholarship will be awarded annually to a post-secondary student based on demonstrated academic achievement, financial need, community service record, and an expressed interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement. This year's award was supplemented with donations collected by the Victoria Shamrocks organization.
