Traffic is being impacted heading into downtown Victoria as commuters have one less bridge available.
A 5-month closure to most traffic on the Point Ellice -- or Bay Street Bridge -- started at 9am Tuesday.
City Hall officials say vehicle traffic will be closed eastbound, towards downtown, until approximately the end of October.
One lane remains open westbound into VicWest until about the end of October.
Assistant Director of Transportation Philip Bellefontaine says the 62-year old span will receive more upgrades tallying more that $6-million dollars, including resurfacing, rust protection, and repairs to cracked concrete.
Pedestrians and cyclists, walking their bikes, can still cross. While full bridge closures are not planned, it may be necessary occasionally.
