On April 26, a cougar was spotted, and captured, in a busy Victoria neighbourhood.
Responding to a tip from someone at the Gorge Road Hospital, police and conservation officers arrived on the scene in the 100-block of Gorge Road East at approximately 4:30.
Speaking with CTV Vancouver Island, Ian Fraser, Senior Animal Control Officer, says the cat was down on the beach, and a dog team was called in.
"When the hounds got here, the cougar was chased up onto the land. The dogs were able to tree the cougar, then it was darted with a tranquilizer."
The cougar went unconscious in the tree, and fire fighters used a ladder to climb up and retrieve the animal.
Fraser says the public's safety is always important, and people who spot predators should call 911 immediately.
Peter Powells with the BC Conservation Service says the cat is a young male, weighing between 80 and 100 pounds, and in good health.
The cougar was taken by the BC Conservation Service, and it will likely be released back into the wild after an assessment.
