The BC Wildfire Service is working to contain a number of fires burning in the Port Renfrew/Shirley area on Southern Vancouver Island.
The burns have caused some smoke to appear in the Victoria area the past few days with residents calling Victoria Fire to find out what's burning.
Donna MacPherson with the BC Wildfire Service says there are six fires burning that were caused by a seasonal burn from local forest companies.
"These kinds of burns do go ahead on Vancouver Island. Most people aren't even aware of them. These fires have been burning for a week to ten days already. It was just the unusual conditions that caused them to kick up a fair amount of smoke."
Timber companies use the slash fires to rid of debris from their land.
MacPherson says the weather has been warm and very dry.
